  • The urban experience varies widely across the world, and its analysis and understanding depends on the observers' personal backgrounds and experiences as well as their professional and educational developments. Furthermore, the experience of teaching and learning at a new university in another country poses new challenges for both teachers and students. Both sides need to navigate the contextual differences between their previous and new pedagogical and social environments, develop ways of communicating with each other, understand their new environment, and benefit from the opportunities that this interface offers. This touches on a broader issue of how we learn new ideas, and the role of critical thinking and dialogical experiences in learning and teaching. The paper explores these themes, drawing on the author's experience of acting as a visiting professor. [Publisher's text]
  • L'esperienza urbana varia a seconda dei contesti geografici e il modo in cui viene analizzata e compresa dipende dal bagaglio culturale e dalle esperienze professionali ed educative attraverso cui ci si è formati. In siffatto contesto, l'insegnamento e l'apprendimento all'estero rappresentano sfide difficili. Studenti e insegnanti devono trovare il modo di superare le differenze fra i contesti pedagogici e sociali cui sono abituati e quelli nuovi, sviluppare modi di comunicare tra loro, comprendere il nuovo ambiente e beneficiare delle opportunità offerte dall'interazione fra loro. L'autore riflette su come sia possibile accostarsi a idee nuove e quale sia il ruolo che tali scambi giocano nell'apprendimento e nell'insegnamento attingendo alla sua esperienza di visiting professor.
