Girolamo, Pseudo-Girolamo? : notes on Some Venetian Incunabula, 1470-1471

2021 - L'Erma di Bretschneider

P. 151-165

  • Girolamo, Pseudo-Girolamo? Notes on Some Venetian Incunabula, 1470-1471This paper seeks to make better known a group of hand-illuminated incunabula printed in Venice in 1470 and 1471, each decorated by a miniaturist with pen and ink drawings. In addition to drawing scholarly attention to these books, it is argued that their decoration closely approximates the style of the well-known miniaturist, Girolamo da Cremona. Because of similarities to works by Girolamo, the analysis addresses a difficult issue of Girolamo chronology, that is, how was his style perpetuated so extensively in Venice in years when he is presumed to be in Tuscany, before being documented in Venice?
