P. 85-96

  • Illuminated Cuttings: The Illustrator in the Tommaso De Lucaʼs Collages from a Speculum iudiciale by Guillaume Durand (Treviso, Biblioteca Comunale, 172).Two collages belonging to a private collection, framed and kept under glass, put together cuttings of small 14th century illuminated heads, one hundred in total. Don Tommaso De Luca, bibliophile from Borca di Cadore, purchased the cuttings in 1793 and the engraver Giacomo Leonardis decorated them. The miniatures were drawn from the Speculum iudiciale now in the Biblioteca Comunale of Treviso. The illumination of the codex, dating around the first half of the Thirties, is the outcome of the collaboration between the Master of the Legendary and the Illustrator, who decorated the majority of the book, helped by some collaborators. The cuttings are attributable to the work of the Illustrator. [Publisher's text]
