The Cicero of Guicciardini has not received much attention so far. Based on an analysis of the various drafts of the introduction to the Storia d'Italia and some passages from Cicero's De Oratore and Orator, which were copied by Guicciardini – and for which a diplomatic edition is proposed – this essay aims to demonstrate that, when the author revised his introduction to the Storia d'Italia, profoundly altering its original structure, Cicero's theoretical writings were his most significant reference points.
