I talismani fra tradizione e critica : Charles Sorel e Jacques Gaffarel

2019 - Le Lettere

75-87 p.

• In the first half of the seventeenth century, the libertine thinker Charles Sorel published the Des Talismans together with the Observations contre les Curiositez Inoüyes so starting a controversy with Jacques Gaffarel, who was reaffirming with new and more sophisticated arguments the magical power of talismans. The theses proposed by Gaffarel are examined in the light of the conceptions of the novatores and of the most innovative results of scientific studies, which help highlight the fraud of the art of talismans and its asserted effects.
