  • The essay reports the results of a research program, carried out since 2006 and still in progress, aimed to the observation of social barriers to emotional contact. The method used in the research program consists in a reworking at a sociological methodology of Gestalt psychotherapy. Techniques to identify the two processes of masking and identification were life stories and in-depth-interviews. These techniques were performed on thirty groups from the variable number between ten and thirty individuals per group, then about six hundred individuals. The observations derived from work on the groups have permitted to build a typology of nine per-sonalities that allows then to establish the basis for developing a social theory of empathy.
