Pensa, uomo, pensa! : Giovanni Gentile e Il concetto dell'uomo nel Rinascimento

This essay presents an historical introduction and a theoretical analysis of Giovanni Gentile's essay Il concetto dell'uomo nel Rinascimento, originally published in the Giornale storico della letteratura italiana in 1916. More in particular, the essay analytically reconstructs the genesis and publishing history of the essay. In addition, the reasons behind Gentile's choice to publish his essay specifically in this journal – reasons that follow a precise cultural strategy – are analyzed, as is the essay's prominent place in Gentile's intellectual biography and in his studies and works on the Renaissance. Finally, the conceptual investigation of Il concetto – which may also be seen as an exemplum of Gentile's philosophical historiography – leads the reader to look again at some of the nodal issues of Gentile's interpretation of the Renaissance, of which it constitutes a fundamental document.
