The Probate Inventories of Piero de' Pazzi (1416-1464)

2025 - Leo S. Olschki

P. 361-420

This article presents the only known inventories of the Pazzi family which predate the infamous conspiracy of 1478, those of Piero di Andrea de' Pazzi (1416-1464). These unpublished documents afford reconsideration of the material and cultural lives of Piero, his relatives, and members of his cultural and political milieux. The lists' contents – maiolica, precious textiles, a Latin library, Mamluk silver work, and Franco-Flemish tapestries – substantiate a cosmopolitan imaginary typical of European courtly networks. The findings and considerations presented here have implications for the study of Renaissance villas and their use, the history of slavery in Quattrocento Florence, the study of private libraries in the Quattrocento, and, more broadly, the historical collections and the material culture in Quattrocento Italy.
