  • Il dibattito sul newtonianesimo è uno dei punti centrali dei Dialoghi sulla religione naturale di Hume. Il saggio analizza l'ideologia apologetica introdotta da Newton durante la sua presidenza alla Royal Society (1703-1727). Essa intendeva dimostrare che le sue teorie scientifiche erano in grado di fornire, attraverso l'argomento del disegno, un solido fondamento al potere di Dio. È indubbiamente su questo sfondo che prende corpo la polemica tra Cleante e Filone. Il saggio, tuttavia, suggerisce che nella critica della santa alleanza tra scienza e religione, i Dialoghi potrebbero anche essere il riflesso del diverso orientamento preso dalla Royal Society a partire dal 1741, quando il suo nuovo presidente cercò di separare le questioni scientifiche da quelle religiose.   • The debate over Newtonianism is one of the key points of Hume's Dialogues concerning Natural Religion. This paper analyses the apologetic ideology introduced by Newton to the Royal Society during his presidency (1703-1727). It was intended to prove how Newton's scientific theories could provide, through the design argument, a solid foundation to the power of God's. Without doubt this is the background to the polemics between Cleanthes and Philo. The paper suggests, however, that in the criticism of the holy alliance between science and religion, the Dialogues could also be reflected in the different orientation which the Royal Society took from 1741, when its new president attempted to separate scientific and religious matters.
