Lumi meridionali a Venezia : l'Esercitazione accademica del 1784

2025 - Bibliopolis

P. 167-181

A literary exercisefrom 1784 held at the most important academy for nobles of the Eighteenth century in Venice, on the occasion of emulating Antonio Genovesi's chair, reintroduced the issue of the reception of Neapolitan Enlightenment in the Republic of Venice. To reweave the thread of this story which unfolds between the search for new teachings at the University of Padua, diplomatic correspondence from Naples, and ambitions of cultural policy, the biography of the patrician Andrea Memmo serves as a sort of fil rouge. Memmo, unable to explicitly continue Genovesi's lesson in Venice, resorted to celebratory architecture, which, in fact, allowed him to strengthen cultural ties with Ferdinando Galiani.

A brilliant yet surprising parable, as at the same time the circulation of Filangieri's Scienza della Legislazione in the Veneto area was primarily taking hold among that group of spiritual heirs of the abbot and philosopher Antonio Conti, to which Memmo belonged. However, this success was entrusted to the erudite letters and travel writings of the scientist Giuseppe Toaldo and no longer to the political action of the patriciate. [Publisherìs text]
