Priniàs : l'insediamento sulla Patela e la necropoli in contrada Siderospilia
P. 87-109
Priniàs. The settlement on the Patela and the Siderospilia necropolis. The anonymous ancient settlement, known in archaeological literature by the name of the nearby modern village of Priniàs, is located in the center of Crete, on the eastern slopes of the Psiloritis mountain range. It is one of the most important sites of the Cretan Iron Age and it offers the remains of both a settlement and a necropolis, which can be studied in parallel. The site has been continuously inhabited since the end of the Bronze Age. It was abandoned in the first half of the 6th century BC, to be reoccupied by a fortress in the Hellenistic period. The research carried out in recent years, both on the basis of the documentation from previous excavations and on the basis of new evidence, has largely helped to clarify the key role played by this site in the central area of the island throughout the Iron Age.
This article aims to provide a general and concise overview of the site, the history of investigations, and new research perspectives, as a revised and expanded version of the two posters presented at the CEARC 25th anniversary exhibition [Publisher's Text].
