This essay reconstructs the evolution of Antonio Labriola's political thought in the early 1880s. During this period, marked in Italy by the governments of Sinistra Storica and the emergence of trasformismo, Labriola distances himself from his youthful moderatism and gradually adopts a more radical perspective, even attempting to take part in the 1886 political elections (along with the radicals). Between 1880 and 1886, he publishes no significant works, aside from a few book reviews. The development of his thought can therefore be traced primarily through an analysis of his largely unpublished notes from university courses in Moral Philosophy. These materials reveal a deep and intense reflection, and indicate that a significant turning point occurred between 1884 and 1886, thus allowing us to confirm and refine Stefano Miccolis' hypothesis of Labriola's slow, gradual departure from a moderate position [Publisher's text].
