- Niccolò Tommaseo examines Saint-Simon's social thought in several occasions, as an opportunity for a literary and historical comparison in political terms. Thus, Tommaseo measures his own ideas against Saint-Simon's vision on the political and social issues that are most crucial to him. In this sense, Saint-Simon's ideas on religious reform and social progress are used as a yardstick for a republican Italy free from the pope's temporal power. Tommaseo inserts the protagonists and theories of the vast world of Saint-Simon into his vision of the old and new boundaries of the relationship between faith and politics. [Publisher's text]
