This essay, presented at the 12th Leonardo Sciascia Colloquium held in Rome on the 7th and 8th of October 2021, aims to offer a more precise contextualisation of Sciascia's debut novels, re-read in the light of themes such as injustice and torture. In Fables from the Dictatorship, Sciascia expands the boundaries of satire or political accusation to encompass a long-term anamnesis that goes beyond the historical dimension of a freshly-ended Fascism, probing the apparently a historical or meta-temporal reality of intolerance and the tyranny of power.
