Giuseppe Dossetti was a central character in the history of the Christian Democratic Party, that he supported in order to fulfill a deep transformation of the country. Nevertheless, from a position of minority, Dossetti was an authoritative speaker for Alcide De Gasperi, but he reached soon the opinion that the DC was not really interested in a reform program, condemning itself to an inevitable decline, and so he decided to turn his efforts elsewhere. Still in 1956, in a memorandum for Cardinal Lercaro published here for the first time, Dossetti pointed out the tactics, rather than ideals that were behind the operation of the opening on the Left.
