Flora endemica e remedia : Creta romana negli scritti di medicina
P. 159-172
Endemic flora and remedia: Roman Crete in medical texts.Cretan medicinal herbs have enjoyed an excellent reputation since the earliest times, and there are numerous modern studies that have emphasised the peculiarities of the species and their distribution areas on the island. Although Origanum dictamnus L./dittany certainly deserves special mention among all of them, the aim of this contribution is nevertheless to verify in Greek and Latin sourcesthe presence of other plants of distinctly Cretan origin (Aristolochia Cretica L., Daucus Creticus Garsault, Cretan polium) and to reflecton the economic and political motivations that may have prompted certain writers of medical texts to "promote" the use of these herbs and, more generally, of the products from the island, especially between the Augustan age and early imperial period, i.e. between the establishment of the provincia of Creta et Cyrenaica in 27 b.c. and the second half of the 2nd to the beginning of the 3rd century a.d [Publisher's Text].
