187-225 p.
- Godfrey of Fontaines (1250-1306/1309) appears in his texts to elaborate a doctrine of freedom not so much as capacity of choice, but as ability to act and to execute correctly the particular task of each faculty, i.e. to reach the good. In this sense, will is free if it follows and conforms itself to the judgment of reason, because the latter is able to evaluate this good. In the "intellectualist perspective" in which he operates, Godfrey attributes freedom first of all to the rational power rather than the volitional power. However, compared to "the radical supporters" of the intellect in moral action, such as Siger of Brabant, Godfrey does not hesitate to attribute freedom also to the will; mainly for two reasons: 1) first of all because will (just like intellect) is an immaterial faculty; 2) because will possesses freedom inasmuch it depends on intellect, which is also free. [Publisher's text].
