  • Nell'ultimo mezzo secolo si è assistito a diverse trasformazioni nel come scrivere una storia militare, nel chi e perché coltivarla, e il panorama storiografico italiano ha dovuto recuperare, in tal senso, non pochi ritardi in ambito accademico. Il saggio restituisce le ragioni e le scelte condivise dai curatori e dagli autori di un volume, dedicato all'età moderna, uscito in una collana che si prefigge di offrire un quadro, scientificamente aggiornato, sul ricorrere del rapporto degli italiani con la guerra, la cultura e le istituzioni militari: una normalità a lungo distorta da ricostruzioni in chiave nazionalistica o, viceversa, contestata da stereotipi frutto di semplificazioni e di letture molto parziali, che gli storici hanno in genere ormai superato.   • The method of writing military history has undergone a number of changes over the last halfcentury, filling in quite a few previously neglected gaps in this area of Italian historiography. This essay reviews the rationale and choices made by the editors and authors of a volume devoted to the modern age. The volume is published in a series dedicated to providing a scholarly updated picture of the ongoing connection between the Italian population and war, military culture and institutions; a state of affairs long misrepresented by nationalistically biased reconstructions or, vice versa, challenged by stereotypes resulting from simplifications and very partial readings; these have been mostly rectified by present-day historians.
