Il recente dibattito storiografico sulla Compagnia di Gesù nell'età della soppressione e della restaurazione

  • Nell'attuale vertiginoso sviluppo degli studi sulla Compagnia di Gesù, la fase relativa all'estinzione settecentesca e alla restaurazione si è ritagliata uno spazio rilevante, anche grazie alla lunga serie di centenari che si sono succeduti dal 2009 al 2017. Il saggio analizza tale tendenza storiografica ricollegandola alle tre prospettive dominanti degli attuali Jesuit Studies provenienti dalle ricerche sulla storia della Compagnia, dagli studi sull'Illuminismo e dalla diffusione della Global o Connected History. Tra gli aspetti che rendono interessante studiare i gesuiti nell'età della soppressione vi è certamente il fatto che, nonostante formalmente il loro ordine non esistesse, essi seppero comunque incidere sul cruciale snodo di fine settecento/inizio ottocento dapprima cercando di "cristianizzare" i Lumi e poi avallando la Restaurazione.   • Current studies into the Society of Jesus have focused on the institution's suppression in the 18th century and its subsequent restoration. Interest in this topic has soared, due also to the celebration of a long series of centenaries between 2009 and 2017. My essay analyses this historiographical trend, linking it to the three main perspectives of present day Jesuit studies, inspired by researches into the history of the Society, by studies on the Enlightenment, and by the diffusion of Global or Connected History. One of the more interesting aspects of research into the Jesuits in the age of their suppression is undoubtedly the fact that, although formally their Order did not exist, they nevertheless played a decisive role at the crucial juncture between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth; initially by attempting to "Christianize" the Enlightenment and later by endorsing the Restoration.
