La cappella Laboccetta nella chiesa conventuale di San Francesco di Paola a Reggio Calabria : un inedito disegno del 1713

2024 - Caracol

P. 73-76

The design of the chapel is contained in a notarial deed drawn up on 2 March 1713 between the Provincial Father of the convent of St Francis of Paola in Reggio Calabria and the brothers Ottavio, Francesco, and Marcello Laboccetta. The brothers undertook to make and embellish the altar of the chapel, with the function of a shrine, within four years. The drawing on parchment paper was made in pencil and watercolor. The architectural layout of the altar is proportionate and harmonious, with an early 18th-century decoration and references to a Baroque language. The Laboccetta chapel was located inside the Church of St. Francis of Paola attached to the convent of the same name.

The convent was founded in 1531 outside the city walls and was completed after 1625. The church was a large building with thirteen altars, adjacent to the convent on the north side and the Calopinace stream on the south side. After 1809, it was planned to transform the convent complex into the central prison of Reggio Calabria. In 1821, the engineer Roberto Aliberti delivered the project, which was not completed until 1837. The church of San Francesco, on the other hand, was demolished perhaps in 1866 to expand the prison [Publisher's text].
