Ambition et limites du corpus théorique du De architectura

2022 - L'Erma di Bretschneider

P. 27-34

The originality claimed by Vitruvius for his treatise is that of constituting a corpus, that is, in general, a log ically organized grouping of all the data relating to the art of building, in the broad sense in which the concept of architectura is meant. However, the corpus, as con ceived by Cicero for example around the same period, implies a global coherence based on a certain number of organizing principles. However the putting into practice of unifying theoretical principles among which Vitruvius states symmetria and veritas, comes up against insur mountable difficulties in De architectura, due to the specific needs of the art of building and to the diversity of the topics dealt with. This article attempts to identify and define the breaking lines, both in terms of content and of presentation, which undermine the coherence of the whole and in some cases alter, if not credibility, at least effectiveness.
