L'URSS in cerca di attenzioni : l'esportazione di film sovietici in India negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta

  • Dagli anni Cinquanta il Sovexportfilm cercò di promuovere le pellicole sovietiche presso il mercato indiano. L'URSS voleva mostrare le proprie opere nelle sale commerciali indiane sia per competere con le produzioni hollywoodiane, sia per non essere accusata di diffondere la propaganda comunista. Inizialmente, i sovietici vendettero i film ai distributori indiani senza un reale controllo sulle proiezioni. Questa politica non produsse, però, i risultati sperati. Perciò, nel 1959 l'URSS cambiò strategia e organizzò eventi (festival e settimane cinematografiche sovietiche) con la partecipazione delle élite indiane. Dagli anni Sessanta i festival cinematografici sovietici divennero, quindi, l'unica via sicura per raggiungere gli spettatori indiani. All'epoca del conflitto sino-indiano del 1962 quei festival, tuttavia, furono percepiti come una “URSS immaginaria” contro cui gli indiani protestarono, vedendo nell'Unione Sovietica un alleato della Cina.   • From the 1950s, the Soviet film export agency Sovexportfilm sought to promote Soviet films at the Indian foreign films market. The Soviets wanted to show their films in commercial Indian theaters both to compete with widely available Hollywood productions and to avoid being accused of disseminating communist propaganda. At first, the Soviets sold films through Indian distributors without actual control of screenings. This policy failed to provide the expected results. Hence, in 1959, the Soviets changed their strategy and organized Soviet film festivals and film weeks with the participation of Indian elites. From the 1960s, Soviet film festivals thus became the only reliable way to reach Indian viewers. At the time of 1962 Sino-Indian conflict, Soviet festivals, however, came to represent the “Soviet Union imaginary” that Indians protested against, seeing the USSR as an ally of China.
