Società neolitiche del sud-est italiano tra VI e V millennio a.C. : simboli e modelli di circolazione mediterranea nella documentazione funeraria

2020 - Istituto italiano di preistoria e protostoria

P. 109-124

  • Study of the topic of interaction andexchange between Neolithic communities through the lens of funerary behaviour can be misleading if we are not cautious in screening the data. This is because the representation we are faced with is the result of a mediation between reality and the image that the Neolithic societies wished to give of themselves through the choice of signs, symbols and communication codes which are minimally decipherable.
  • That said, analysis of the funerary aspects can make an important contribution to the topic under discussion. In the case of an area strategic for contacts and exchange such as the south-east of Italy, and Apulia in particular, halfway between the Italian peninsula, the central-eastern Mediterranean and trans-Adriatic territories, what emerges is a locally reworked adherence to models and symbols that are common on a wide geographical scale. The study is based on the examination of several contexts which present many elements of interest, located in five Apulian territorial districts and dated between the 6th and 5th millennium BC.
