Ritagli di Novecento : saggi su intellettuali, culture del libro e lettura in Italia

2026 - Firenze University Press

274 p.

The writings collected here examine the significance that books and reading—including organized reading (bibliography, libraries)—assumed in the reflections of Italian intellectuals, in their lives, and in the public sphere during the period following World War I and the two decades of Fascism, with a retrospective look at the Giolittian era: a long and difficult period, in which those connections were often experienced and interpreted through the lens of crisis (of the market, of status, of values) or of a militant struggle. The theme takes shape through references to well-known and lesser-known authors (among others, Prezzolini, Provenzal, Baldini, Sorani, and Gramsci), publishers (Formiggini, Vallecchi), cultural or bibliographic journals (Il Marzocco, La Voce, L'Italia che scrive, I Libri del giorno, La Fiera letteraria), and propaganda initiatives (book fairs and festivals).
