In the middle of the fourteenth century, a distinctive literary and poetic movement took root in medieval England. Today it is known as the Alliterative Revival, so called because its verse draws on the Germanical literative tradition - though with many innovations and differencesof its own. The works, often anonymous, were composed mainly in the Midlands and covered a wide range of subjects, yet they reveal a marked preference for moral, didactic, and allegorical themes. Among the most celebrated of these are Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Patience,and Purity - all preserved in the same manuscript - as well as St.Erkenwald, the poem at the heart of this volume. Unlike the other works attributed to the same author, St. Erkenwald has long been described by many as a hagiography. In reality, it is a text of far greater ideological and theological depth.

This becomes clear when one examines its textual connections to the literature it invokes and draws upon, and especially when one undertakes a detailed linguistic and textual analysis. At the core of the first part of this book is an exploration of the subtle interplay between vocabulary and ideological narrative - specifically, how loan words are used not merely for stylistic variety or lexical enrichment, but as deliberate tools for shaping complex literary,theological, and socio-political meanings.The volume concludes with a complete translation of the poem and a reference glossary, enabling readers to place the preceding discussion in its full context [Publisher's Text].

Alla metà del XIV secolo nell'Inghilterra medievale nasce un fenomeno letterario e poetico, ormai stabilmente identificato come ‘Alliterative revival', in quanto fonda la sua versificazione su una metrica allitterativa, derivante dal verso allitterante germanico, seppure con molte novità e differenze. Si tratta di poemi, tendenzialmente anonimi, composti soprattutto nelle Midlands su temi vari, con una innegabile tendenza per il genere didattico morale o allegorico. A uno stesso autore vengono attribuiti tra i più bei componimenti, quali Galvano e il cavaliere verde, Perla, Pazienza e Purezza, tutti contenuti in uno stesso codice, e St. Erkenwald, il poema a cui è dedicato questo volume.

A differenza degli altri poeti ad esso associati per autorialità, questo poema è stato per molto tempo e da molti definito un testo agiografico. In verità, ha una grande portata ideologica e teologica, che emerge dall'analisi delle relazioni testuali con la letteratura a cui fa riferimento e a cui si ispira e soprattutto dall'indagine testuale e linguistica. Al centro della prima parte di questo volume c'è la sofisticata interazione tra scelta lessicale e narrazione ideologica, ovvero l'esplorazione dei prestiti come strumenti di comunicazione ideologica. Lontano dal mero arricchimento lessicale o dalla variazione stilistica, i prestiti lessicali vengono impiegati strategicamente dal poeta di sant'Erkenwald per costruire sfumati significati letterari, teologici e socio-politici.
