Nuove scoperte nell'areale della necropoli di Giubiasco-Palasio (TI)

  • In February 2013, 29 tombs of Early and Middle La Tène period have been excavated in Giubiasco-Palasio, in the municipality of Bellinzona. The survey, which took place during construction work on a residential building, was directed by the Archaeological Service of Canton Ticino (UBC). The high number of Iron Age tombs makes this excavation to one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the region over the last years. This new group of tombs is additional to the over 500 graves in proximity of Giubiasco's railway station, on which multiple researches have been conducted in the early 20th century.
  • The funerary sets are characterized by relative homogeneity; three graves are characterized by particular signs of opulence: tomb 35 by a bronze Schnabelkanne produced in Canton Ticino, associated to a black lacquered campana vase; tomb 24 by an iron sword and a silver ring; tomb 21 by an 8-shaped knitted iron belt and rich bronze adornment. Besides the analysis of the funerary sets, aim of this paper is to understand the spatial organization and the chronological development of this new tombs as well as to integrate them with the data obtained from the previous studies in order to verify the reliability of the deductions that were drawn in the early 20th century.
