  • Nel lontano futuro del 2222, raccontato nella Storia filosofica dei secoli futuri, l'umanità è minata dalle nefaste conseguenze di un progresso che è rimasto circoscritto al perfezionamento dei sistemi di produzione economica. La tensione dinamica delle idee si è allentata in un eterno presente in cui il sapere è stato proscritto e l'obiettivo dell'educazione morale e civile del popolo è stato abbandonato. Il genere umano si avvia verso l'estinzione; non possono salvarlo le contraddizioni e le incongruenze delle strategie politiche, ma neanche le teorie del socialismo utopico o anarchico, che mostrano le loro inquietanti faglie.
  • Dalla sua caduta nel nulla di un tempo vuoto, nel quale si sono spente la speranza e la fede nel futuro, si salva tuttavia un manoscritto, a ricordare che la letteratura è memoria del passato e costruzione del futuro, e che solo la luce delle idee può illuminare il cammino dell'umanità. In questo testo, che è tra i suoi ultimi, Nievo non si limita a scrutare con spirito critico e disincantato il presente; egli si interroga sul futuro dell'umanità, e su ciò che la letteratura può ancora rivelarne.   • In the distant future of 2222, told in the Storia filosofica dei secoli futuri, humanity is undermined by the harmful consequences of a progress that has remained limited to the improvement of economic production systems. The dynamic tension of ideas has released in an eternal present in which knowledge has been banished and the objective of the moral and civil education of the people has been abandoned. Humankind is heading towards extinction; the contradictions and inconsistencies of political strategies cannot save him, but neither can the theories of utopian or anarchist socialism, which show their disturbing flaws. From its fall into nothingness of an empty time, in which hope and faith in the future have died out, a manuscript is nevertheless saved, as a reminder that literature is memory of the past and construction of the future.
  • From this point of view, only the light of ideas can illuminate the path of humanity. In this text, one of the last of Nievo, the writer does not limit himself to scrutinizing the present with a critical and disenchanted spirit; he wonders about the future of humanity, and about what literature can still reveal.
