Orlando fantastico : il non credibile vero

  • Nell'Orlando Furioso dell'Ariosto, ciò che è reale e ciò che sembra reale, ciò che è fantasia o sembra fantasia, coesistono. Nel poema non sappiamo esattamente dove ci troviamo, ma solo che siamo lì: simultaneamente si intraprendono tutte le vie. A quasi quarant'anni dal capolavoro dell'Ariosto, per Camões il mondo è dolorosamente reale e la via scelta dall'eroe deve essere quella giusta, perché è la sola possibile. Il poema dell'Ariosto è lo specchio oscuro (o luminoso) dell'altro? Non considerare nulla impossibile dice Camões al suo eroe (e ai lettori). Chi lo ha voluto, ha sempre trovato un modo. Anche tu sarai annoverato fra gli eroi, e quest'Isola di Venere sarà tua. [Testo dell'editore]
  • In Ariosto's Orlando furioso, what is real and what seems to be real, what is fantasy or seems to be fantasy, cohabit. We are never certain of where we are in the poem except that we are there: all paths are chosen simultaneously. In Camões' Os Lusíadas, published almost four decades after Ariosto's masterpiece, the world is painfully real and the path chosen for the hero must be the right one because there is only one. Is Ariosto's poem the dark (or light) mirror of the other one? Count nothing impossible, Camões tells his hero (and his readers). He who willed always found a way. In the end you too will be listed on fame's scroll of heroes, and this Island of Venus will be yours. Ariosto, instead, does not require a final moral for his tale. The whole of Orlando furioso is its own exultant moral. [Publisher's text]
