  • One of the most important instruments available to the European Union to ensure security and the protection of citizens' rights is the Internal Security Strategy. It is an appropriate tool for the development of public security policies in the Member States. Despite the necessary reserve with which they operate, intelligence services play a vital role in protecting national security and helping to ensure that law enforcement authorities respect the rule of law. The article examines the role of intelligence services as defined in the strategies for the fight against organised crime and serious crime, which contain guidelines for internal security in Europe.
