The codification of five orders is, as well known, a progressive acquisition of Renaissance treatises, that have no direct match to Vitruvius's De architectura. The aim of this paper is to consider the approach to the question of architectural orders in the first illustrated edition of De architectura, curated by Fra Giocondo da Verona. The effort taken by the Humanist and Scholar from Verona represents a turning point in Vitruvian studies and it deserves attention because it's a mirror of difficulties in understanding and conveying Vitruvius, and – to the other hand – Giocondo established exempla and models for the next generation.
