  • The author analyses the prospects for Southern Italy (the Mezzogiorno) in the decade following the end of the Second World War. The development of the Mezzogiorno became an issue in the international economic cooperation debate on the underdeveloped areas of the world. Svimez (Associazione per lo sviluppo dell'industria nel Mezzogiorno) played a decisive role in raising the issue of the Southern question, leading to the creation of the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno, with the aim to overcome Italy's dualism by boosting productive labour in the South. The author has carried out close, systematic scrutiny of the official journal, Informazioni Svimez, to appraise this dualism and describe the activity of the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno to boost productive labour in the South, as well as the interest of the agencies for international economic cooperation in the development of that region.
