The human being lives in the possible, not in reality. We are more attractedby what we discover as absent and yet possible, than by being satisfied by what ispresent and real. What we should, would, or could do as possible is what takes away all consistency from the present fact. I have personally defined this situationas “consistentialism”: the authentic consistency is the consistency of the possible, not that of the real. It is the gap between the finite historical and the infinite that generates freedom. If such a gap did not exist, where there is balance between demandand answer, like communicating vessels, if answers fit the demand, no freedom would be generated, but a simple and univocal answer to be repeated for everyone and always (instinct).
