D. Pius Lisci pusillus geometra : su Vincenzo Viviani e Galileo

2022 - Leo S. Olschki

P. 67-86

  • As a very young pupil Vincenzo Viviani lived at Arcetri during Galileo's final years, and following Galileo's death made his teacher's rehabilitation a raison d'être of his own existence. The atmosphere following Galileo's condemnation in 1633, the continuing banning of Copernicus' works, the Tuscan Grand Duchy's change of direction towards a new cultural policy, less receptive to the Galilean traditionand more closely aligned to an intransigent Catholicism and to clerical circles, did not make Viviani's task easy. His fears and tendencies to delayand self-censure his writings impelled him to modify the fundamental philosophical tenets of his teacher, preventing him at the same time from completing his project for a biography and an edition of the complete works of Galileo. Viviani's legacy honours his rôle as Galileo's last disciple, stubbornly perpetuated in title-pages and memorials, culminating in his desire for a joint burial with the master. [Publisher's text]
