L'Enimma o sonetto enigmatico di Galileo

2022 - Leo S. Olschki

P. 55-66

  • This short essay proposes a new interpretation of Galileo's famousriddle which appeared in 1643 in The Sphinx by Antonio Malatesti. In my opinion the monster with varied forms of limbs, partly white and partly black, that shows itself in the night and disappears in the daylight, is evidently the Moon. Following this interpretative key, the host of hunters who pursue her tracks in the sky certainly includes astronomers such as Galileo. Once again, the work of the man of science is indicated through the metaphor of hunting, as already found in the works of Giordano Bruno or Francis Bacon. This riddle demonstrates Galileo's great ability in composing puzzles, other examples of which are the anagrams sent to Kepler. [Publisher's text]
