Pharaonis induratio cordis : the Anti-Fatalism of Honorius Augustodunensis
139-161 p.
- The anti-fatalism controversy of Honorius Augustodunensis appears to belong to the tradition of Christian exegesis, centring on its most typical doctrinal core, the theme of human freedom. In the Libellus de libero arbitrio and Inevitable Honorius faces the problem of fatalism, whether in its astrological aspect, using the so-called argument of Carneades, or in its more strictly theological sense, interpreting the biblical passage on the hardening of Pharaoh's heart. As a result, a new image of Honorius emerges: not merely a thinker who relied on sources identified by historians of the last century – Augustine, Eriugena and Anselm – but also a connoisseur of Boethius, whose literary tradition featured significantly in the Latin philosophical culture of the twelfth century. [Publisher's text].
