Public History : verso la maturità? Scelte e sfide di una "via italiana"

Dopo alcuni anni di crescita impetuosa, la Public History italiana dovrebbe affrontare una serie di questioni fondamentali. In primo luogo, dovrebbe procedere verso una definizione concordata del suo campo di ricerca. Inoltre, dovrebbe affrontare due questioni rilevanti: cosa significa esattamente che la Public History intende lavorare con il pubblico? E quale impatto ha ciò sul ruolo degli storici? Si pone così la questione della shared authority. Ne consegue la discussione sul perché sia opportuno lavorare con un pubblico più ampio. Infine, si dovrebbe identificare un terreno comune tra le pratiche di Public History e la formazione/ricerca accademica. Questa è la strada verso la maturità. [Testo dell'editore]

After a few years of rapid growth, Italian Public History needs to address a few fundamental issues. Firstly, it should agree on a definition of its research field. Secondly, it should broach two pressing issues: What does it mean that Public History is intended to work with the public? And what impact does this statement have on the role of historians? Both questions raise the matter of shared authority. Thirdly, a discussion on the reasons why it makes sense to work with a wider audience needs to follow. Finally, a common ground between Public History practices and education/academic research should be identified. All this constitutes the path towards maturity. [Publisher's text]
