Fra distanziamento e competizione : le politiche culturali della Rft e della Rdt in Italia durante la Guerra fredda (1947-1968)

Nel saggio l'autrice indaga la politica culturale che i due Stati tedeschi (Repubblica federale e Repubblica democratica tedesca) svilupparono in Italia durante la Guerra fredda, partendo dai primi contatti che si stabilirono dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale, fino alla fine degli anni Sessanta. In questi due decenni ci fu una sensibile evoluzione: dalla fase iniziale, segnata da scambi piuttosto limitati, a metà degli anni Cinquanta entrambi gli Stati diedero avvio a una consapevole politica culturale, che progressivamente vide un'aperta concorrenza fra Repubblica federale e Repubblica democratica, particolarmente accesa durante gli anni Sessanta.Il saggio si concentra sull'attività dei due enti più significativi che ebbero sede a Roma: la Deutsche Bibliothek, che rispondeva all'ambasciata e al ministero degli Esteri tedesco-occidentale e il Centro Thomas Mann, sostenuto dalla Rdt e dal Pci e animato da intellettuali italiani

In this essay, the author investigates the cultural politics that the two German States (Federal Republic and German Democratic Republic) developed in Italy during the Cold War, from the first contacts established after the Second World War to the late 1960s. Over these two decades, a noticeable evolution took place: while the earlier phase was marked by rather limited exchanges, in the mid-Fifties both States initiated a conscious cultural policy, which progressively saw open competition between the Federal Republic and the Democratic Republic, especially during the Sixties.The essay focuses on the activities of the two most significant institutions based in Rome: the Deutsche Bibliothek, supported by the West-German embassy and the Foreign ministry, on the one hand, and the Thomas Mann Centre, supported by the Gdr and the Pci and led by Italian intellectuals, on the other
