Il Mezzogiorno pre-­ e postunitario nei libri di Storia per le superiori

  • Il contributo prende in esame circa 40 manuali di storia per le scuole superiori di secondo grado attualmente in commercio allo scopo di verificare in che modo essi affrontino alcune fasi cruciali della storia del Mezzogiorno ottocentesco: l'età preunitaria sotto il regime borbonico (1815-1860), il processo di unificazione e l'età postunitaria (1861-1914).
  • La prima parte del saggio analizza alcuni fra i più rilevanti fattori che condizionano la produzione dei libri di testo scolastici: le indicazioni ministeriali, il profilo degli autori, il ruolo giocato dalle case editrici, dai loro consulenti e dagli editor, le esigenze didattiche e commerciali, i destinatari, la formazione dei docenti e le relazioni fra l'insegnamento della storia a scuola e la public history. La seconda parte analizza invece testi e immagini dei manuali selezionati per mostrare quanto e come l'ampia storiografia sul Mezzogiorno ottocentesco penetri nella manualistica, quali paradigmi storiografici e approcci prevalgano, e in che modo la storia del Sud entri nelle scuole italiane.   • The essay analyzes about 40 high-school textbooks currently on the market to ascertain how they deal with some crucial phases of the nineteenth-century history of Southern Italy (the so-called Mezzogiorno): the pre-unification Bourbon regime (1815-1860), the unification process, and the post-unification era (1861-1914). The first part of the essay analyzes some major factors that affect textbook writing: the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education, the authors' profiles, the role played by publishing houses, editors and advisors, marketing and didactical issues, readership, teachers' training, and the relationship between teaching history at school and public history. The second part of the article scans textbook texts and images in order to show to what extent the huge historiography on the Mezzogiorno permeates the textbooks and what historiographical paradigms and approaches prevail in dealing with the history of Southern Italy at school.
