Il saggio intende gettare un primo sguardo al ricco materiale contenuto in Archivio Verri, soprattutto alle cart. 323 e 324, denominate "Consulte" di Gabriele Verri. La consulta del padre dei fratelli Verri in tema di tortura è ampiamente nota ma non lo sono le consulte redatte sugli argomenti più svariati a mezzo del Settecento, che offrono una chiave di lettura su molte delle questioni di più scottante attualità in quel momento storico. Vi si trovano pareri su problematiche successorie riguardo a famiglie illustri del Ducato, per fare un esempio fra i tanti, o sull'opportunità di raccogliere in una sola edizione le innumerevoli gride per un certo periodo di tempo con intenti "consolidatori" e di certezza del diritto, proposta proveniente da Giuliani. Non vi sono solo "consulte" redatte da Gabriele, ma a lui si affiancano, nella sottoscrizione, altri nomi di soggetti operanti nel Ducato e attenti alla cosa pubblica. [Testo dell'editore]
