A socialist built legacy in a small shrinking city : the case of Zernograd, southern Russia

  • The future of the built legacy in the shrinking cities is usually discussed in literature from two points of view: the difficulties of preserving the architectural legacy under conditions of shrinkage and the opportunities that it can create for cities' rehabilitation. Our paper aims to explore how urban shrinkage affects the built legacy of the socialist period in a city without pre-socialist history, identity and population - Zernograd. The study demonstrates through field observation, literature review, statistical and document analysis and online survey that the initial phase of urban shrinkage contributes positively to the preservation and maintenance of socialist built legacy and also gives time for its reevaluation, while dissatisfaction with obsolete functions and a lack of resources for renovation puts its future at risk.   • Le sorti del patrimonio costruito nelle città in contrazione sono solitamente discusse in letteratura a partire da due punti di vista: le difficoltà di conservare il patrimonio, le opportunità che questo può offrire per un rilancio. Attraverso il caso di Zernograd, una piccola città di nuova fondazione sovietica, l'articolo esplora il modo in cui lo shrinkage influisce sull'eredità costruita socialista di una città priva di una precedente storia, identità e popolazione.
