La rappresentazione dell'ebreo come figura dell'alterità è stata presente nella penisola iberica fin dall'epoca medievale, e sempre da tempi remoti tale figura emergeva nell'immaginario letterario iberico in opere polemizzanti, satiriche o moraleggianti. Ma oltre ai testi teatrali e narrativi stereotipati, scritti da autori di origine non ebraica, esisteva una altrettanto vasta e spesso meno conosciuta letteratura giudaica – prodotta da ebrei italiani, spagnoli o portoghesi, da ebrei convertiti (marrani), o in forma anonima – che permette di studiare da una prospettiva diversa la figura dell'ebreo e la sua cultura. Il presente volume esamina le varie raffigurazioni dell'ebreo per la sua natura multisfaccettata e non univoca, e le rivisitazioni della tradizione biblica in ambito letterario e teatrale italiano, portoghese e spagnolo di epoca moderna. The figure of the Jew had been portrayed as a symbol of otherness since the Middles Ages and emerged in the Iberian literary tradition mainly in polemical, satirical or moralizing works. In addition to the stereotypical theatrical and narrative texts written by authors of non-Jewish origin, there existed an equally vast and often lesser-known Jewish literature – produced by Italian, Spanish or Portuguese Jews, by Jewish converts (Marranos), or anonymously – that allows the figure of the Jew and Jewish culture to be studied from a different perspective. This volume examines the various depictions of the Jew based on a multifaceted and non-unique nature, and the revisitations that can be found in the biblical tradition in Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish literary and theatrical contexts of the modern period.
