L'elemento militare nella rappresentazione della regalità sabauda

  • Ogni dinastia ha costruito la propria immagine sfruttando alcuni elementi retorici. Nel caso dei Savoia l'elemento militare fu uno dei più duraturi strumenti di autorappresentazione e di promozione a livello non solo italiano, ma europeo. L'esercito dei Savoia reclutato nei territori dei propri domini, in realtà, non bastò mai, né l'aristocrazia sabauda manifestò in maniera uniforme e continuativa la vocazione alle armi. I Savoia ebbero, infatti, sempre bisogno del mercato del mercenariato, che diventò una delle forme di nobilitazione più sicure, ma anche uno strumento di periodica ricomposizione dei ranghi della nobiltà. Una tale retorica del potere fondata sul "militare" si rafforzò nell'Ottocento approdando a un autentico canone, destinato a trovar fortuna nell'amplificazione di una storiografia a uso pubblico.   • Each sovereign dynasty built its own image by exploiting some rhetorical elements. In the case of the Savoys, the military element was one of the most enduring tools of self-representation and international promotion. The army of the Savoy recruited in the territories of their domains, in reality, was never enough, nor did the Savoyard aristocracy uniformly and continuously manifest their vocation to arms. In fact, the Savoys always needed the mercenary market, which became one of the principal forms of ennoblement, but also an instrument of periodic recomposition of the ranks of the nobility. Such a rhetoric of power based on the "military" was strengthened in the nineteenth century, arriving at an authentic canon, destined to find fortune in the amplification of a precise historiography for public use.
