Aspetti architettonici e microclima : Biblioteca General Histórica de la Universidad di Salamanca e Biblioteca Malatestiana a confronto

2022 - Leo S. Olschki

P. 183-204

  • In defining how to protect historical buildings and the works of value which they contain (furniture, documents, rare books, etc.) it is fundamental to understand the history of architectural construction and the changes in climate and micro-climate, in use and management which have characterised these interiors over the course of their existence, given that micro-climatic conditions have a significant impact on the state of conservation both of a building itself and its contents.
  • From a comparison of the original rooms of the Biblioteca General Histórica (1509) of the University of Salamanca in Spain and the earliest surviving public library in Italy, the Malatestiana in Cesena (1447-1452), it becomes clear how closely related the formal elements of the architecture, the arrangement of the spaces, the choice of materials and structural features are, as well as the way in which such characteristics were also intended to create specific micro-climatic parameters (relative humidity and air temperature) which are still today optimal for the conservation of the heritage items housed in these buildings.
