Preliminary study of the stone materials used in the archaeological sites of Festòs and Haghia Triada.The characterisation of the stone materials used in the archaeological sites of Festòs and Haghia Triada was carried out as part of the archaeological mission coordinated by Prof. Pietro Militello of the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania. The mission, which took place in July 2022 and repeated in July 2023, saw a fruitful collaboration between geologists and archaeologistsand concerned the identification at the macroscopic scale and a preliminary characterisation of the stone materials present in the two archaeological sites; moreover, it accomplished the mapping of the different materials used for the construction of the late Minoan palace of Festòs together with the warehouses and residential quarters, including the eastern and northwestern ones, and for the constructionof the archaeological site of Haghia Triada.

In particular, before proceeding with the characterisation of the building materials, a detailed bibliographic study was carried out with the aim of identifying the raw materials used in antiquity for construction purposes. At the same time, it was necessary to investigate the geology of the area, information that cannot be disregarded for the study and recognition of stone construction materials used in ancient times, to reconstruct and understand the relationships existing between the archaeological site and the geological context of the location.
