Not just a bridge for the Strait of Messina

This article describes the impressive set of works that will enable connection of the Strait of Messina Bridge to the existing road and rail network.The project, which will connect Sicily to the mainland and the Mediterranean to Europe, it will form the hub for an integrated infrastructure system that will complete the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor known as the TEN-T network (Helsinki - Palermo - Valletta), which will make extension of the national and European railway line in Calabria and Sicily sustainable. It will also thrust the two regions' ports into the heart of Europe. The total length of the bridge is 3,666 metres, resulting from the sum of the length of the 3,300-metres central span and the length of the two183-metres lateral spans. Navigation clearance will be 72 metres over a width of 600 metres.

This will be 70 metres under normal traffic conditions, namely when the road lanes are full of traffic and two passenger trains are crossing the bridge at the same time. The bridge infrastructure is joined to a complex system of connections to the existing 40-kilometres network, comprising 20.3 kilometres of road links, including approximately 11.5kilometres through tunnels, and 20.2 kilometres of rail links, for about 18.5 kilometres through tunnels. These links are spread across Sicily and Calabria, serving the areas of Messina, Villa San Giovanni (RC) and Campo Calabro (RC), respectively [Publisher's Text].

Il presente articolo illustra l'imponente insieme di opere che permetteranno al ponte sullo Stretto di Messina di collegarsi alla rete stradale e ferroviaria esistente. L'Opera, che unirà la Sicilia al continente ed il Mediterraneo all'Europa, nel suo complesso representer pertanto lo snodo di un sistema infrastrutturale integrato che completerà il Corridoio Scandinavo - Mediterraneo denominato Rete TEN (Helsinki - Palermo - La Valletta), rendendo sostenibile il prolungamento della linea ferroviaria nazionale ed europea in Calabria e in Sicilia e proiettando i porti delle due regioni al centro dell'Europa. Il Ponte presenta una lunghezza complessiva di 3666 m, data dalla somma di 3300 m di lunghezza della campata centrale e dalla lunghezza delle due campate laterali da 183 m, con franco navigabile di 72 m, per una larghezza di 600 metri, che raggiunge i 70 metri in presenza di condizioni di traffico ordinario, ovvero con pieno carico delle corsie stradali e due treni passeggeri in contemporanea.

All'Opera di "attraversamento", si aggiunge il complesso sistema di collegamenti del ponte alla rete esistente per un totale di circa 40 km suddivisi in 20.3 km di raccordi stradali, di cui circa 11.5 km in galleria e 20.2 km di raccordi ferroviari, di cui circa 18.5 km in galleria, variamente distribuiti sul territorio siciliano e calabrese, rispettivamente nell'area di Messina, di Villa S.
