Vedere l'invisibile, misurare l'infinito, controllare il movimento, rappresentare l'assenza, disegnare l'orizzonte, sono aspirazioni non solo di mistici e maghi, ma anche di quei matematici, filosofi e artisti che, tra Quattro e Cinquecento, coltivarono l'audacia di superare le colonne d'Ercole della scienza bassomedievale. In questo volume, Cusano e Leonardo sono assunti come esempi di tale aspirazione ad allargare i confini del sapere razionale, non rinnegando la ragione, ma potenziandone al massimo le possibilità, anche a condizione di farla entrare in contraddizione con se stessa. L'obiettivo, che condividono tra loro e con altri contemporanei, è quello di rappresentare con coerenza scientifica una iper-realtà allargata agli ambiti del poter-essere e dell'essere pensabile. Seeing the invisible, measuring the infinite, controlling motion, representing absence, drawing the horizon: these were the aspirations not only of mystics and magicians, but also of those mathematicians, philosophers and artists who, between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, cultivated the audacity to venture beyond the Herculean pillars of late medieval science. In this volume, Cusanus and Leonardo are presented as examples of the pursuit of those aspirations in an attempt to push the boundaries of rational knowledge not by denying reason but by enhancing its possibilities to the point of contradicting reason itself. The goal, which both of them share with other contemporaries, was to represent with scientific coherence an expanded hyper-reality that also included the realms of the possible and the thinkable.
