The Italian mission in Carthage, directed by Antonino di Vita, operated between 1973 and 1977 as part of the UNESCO project for the preservation of the ancient metropolis. This volume collects the results of the archaeological excavations carried out at the site, directed by Andea Carandini, aimed at verifying the limits of the Roman city, the relations between rural centuriation and urban layout, between urban planning and its realisation, and between city and necropolis. The stratigraphies and finds of the three areas under investigation, located in one of the least known sectors of Carthage, but decisive in providing answers to the questions posed by the fieldwork, are illustrated in detail together with a wide selection of graphs, drawings, photos.

Roads, insulae, monuments (Theodosius II's defensive walls and the city gate), cemeteries (Punic, Roman, Vandal) appear within a narrative in which the re-birth (the Augustan colony of 29 B.C.) and the end of the city (the capture at the hands of the Arabs and the destruction of 698 A.D.) are punctually reflected in the archaeological documentation.
