La flotta ritrovata : riconsiderando il giacimento di ancore romane di Santo Janni di Maratea

Le ancore romane rinvenute nel sito archeologico subacqueo di Maratea - Santo Janni (Mar Tirreno - Italia) sono qui riconsiderate alla luce di alcune informazioni trasmesse dalla storiografia antica, dei dati topografici, e delle iscrizioni sui ceppi di piombo. La formazione del giacimento è messa in relazione al bellum Siculum che dal 38 al 36 a.C. contrappose le flotte di Ottaviano e Sesto Pompeo nelle acque del Tirreno meridionale e dello Stretto di Messina, e alle vicende degli anni immediatamente precedenti che trovano la migliore illustrazione nel V libro delle Guerre Civili di Appiano. Riesaminati in questa stretta cornice temporale, nomi e sigle iscritti sui ceppi d'ancora potrebbero individuare alcuni protagonisti di quegli anni concitati. Si configurerebbe pertanto una felice congruenza di narrazione storica e dati archeologici, che permette di superare le criticità di altre ipotesi interpretative. [Testo dell'editore]

The Roman anchors found in the underwater archaeological site of Maratea - Santo Janni (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) are here reconsidered in the light of some information, hitherto neglected, transmitted by ancient historiography, of topographic data, and inscriptions on the lead stocks. The formation of the deposit is related to the bellum Siculum, which from 38 to 36 BC. pitted the fleets of Octavian and Sextus Pompeius in the waters of the southern Tyrrhenian Sea and the Strait of Messina, and to the events of the immediately preceding years, which are best illustrated in the fifth book of Appian's Civil Wars. Reconsidered in this narrow time frame, names and acronyms inscribed on the anchor stocks could identify some of the protagonists of those tumultuous years. There would therefore be a happy congruence of historical narrative and archaeological data, which allows us to overcome critical issues of other interpretative hypotheses. [Publischer's text]
