L'Emigrazione ebraica attraverso il porto di Trieste tra Ottocento e Novecento : spazi, pratiche, organizzazioni assistenziali, memorie

  • Tra Otto e Novecento il porto di Trieste fu un hub fondamentale in Europa e in Italia per l'emigrazione ebraica in Palestina, soprattutto per gli ebrei provenienti dall'Europa dell'Est, mentre dopo il 1933 esso divenne la principale via di fuga per gli ebrei tedeschi e austriaci, diretti nelle Americhe e a Shanghai. L'articolo analizza, sulla base della storiografia esistente e sull'esame delle fonti orali e visive, le fasi e l'organizzazione di questo flusso migratorio attraverso il porto adriatico, soffermandosi sul ruolo svolto dal Comitato Italiano di Assistenza agli Emigranti Ebrei di Trieste fino al 1943, che grazie alla sua rete di relazioni internazionali con le grandi agencies ebraiche, con le autorità italiane e con le compagnie di navigazione rese possibile la partenza di migliaia di persone verso la salvezza.

  • Between the 19th and the 20th century the port of Trieste was a fundamental hub in Europe and Italy for Jewish emigration to Palestine, especially for Jews coming from Eastern Europe, while after 1933 it became the main flight route for German and Au-­ strian Jews heading to the Americas and Shanghai. The article analyses, on the basis of available historiography and on the study of oral and visual sources, the phases and the organization of this migration flow through the Adriatic port, focusing on the role played by the Italian Committee for Assistance to Jewish Emigrants of Trieste until 1943, which thanks to its network of connections with the major Jewish agencies, the Italian authorities and the shipping companies made possible the departure of thousands of people towards safety.
  • The focus of the article is on the spaces that were reserved for Jewish emigration to Trieste, the bureaucratic procedures necessary for departure and the individual expe-­ riences, which allow us to reconstruct, through ego-­documents, the emotions, desires, fears and hopes of the refugees.
