The Encomium of George Akropolites for St George (BHG 684a)

2023 - LYSA Publishers

P. 383-407

  • This paper presents a critical edition of George Akropolites' encomium for St George (BHG 684a), which was erroneously attributed to the great logothete Constantine Akropolites - a well-known Byzantine scholar and author of many hagiological works - on the basis of the title of one of the manuscripts preserving the text (Paris, BnF, gr. 976). The attribution to George Akropolites – who is referred to as the author of the encomium in the other two manuscripts (namely Athos, Monê Megistês Lauras, Γ 99 (Εustratiades 399) and Zaborda, Monê tou hagiou Nikanoros 117) - is confirmed on the one hand by the references in the encomium's prologue regarding the author's name, which is the namesake of the martyr, and on the other hand from the mention of the encomium in letter 25 of Constantine Akropolites, as well as in letter 36 of Gregory (patriarch) of Cyprus, who was a former student of Akropolites.
